The FRCR 2B exam is crucial for radiology trainees aiming to achieve fellowship status with the Royal College of Radiologists. It is a challenging examination that does need preparation. In this blog, we’ll provide some essential tips to help you succeed.

How the FRCR 2B exam works

The FRCR 2B exam consists of three components:

  • Reporting Session: Six long cases requiring detailed reporting.

  • Rapid Reporting Session: 30 cases, with a mix of normal and abnormal findings.

  • Oral Examination: A viva-style exam with two examiners assessing trainees’ interpretation skills.

Prepare with confidence

Passing the exam is not easy. It will require good amount of study time, practice and preparation. Our FRCR 2B revision courses are here to give you the best guidance. With top expert faculty assisting you, you will gain better confidence.

Tips for long cases and rapid reporting in the FRCR 2B exam

When tackling long cases, we do suggest adopting a structured approach. This means looking carefully, analysing the findings, and considering possible diagnoses with clinical context. Manage your time well by spending 7–8 minutes per case to stay efficient and thorough.

Regarding rapid reporting, it’s best practice to use a binary approach and decide if an image is normal or abnormal without overanalysing. Efficiency isn’t something that will come overnight. It will require practicing daily with high-volume rapid reporting sets. This way, you’ll make great progress in improving efficiency

General tips for FRCR 2B exam

Remember, examiners are assessing your reasoning, so think out loud as you work through cases. Keep it clear and concise by avoiding unnecessary details. Use structured descriptions too. Make sure to practice with common cases through group study and mock vivas.

Additionally, make it an objective to use past mock FRCR 2B exams or questions and answer in a timed session to condition yourself to practice under pressure.

As with any exams, it is fundamental to avoid burnout. Take breaks, eat well and get good amount of rest to stay sharp and focused.

Good luck with your preparation!
